Training packages are developed by Industry through National Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs) recognised bodies or by enterprises to meet the identified training needs of specific industry sectors. All courses at Kent Institute conform to industry standards and are recognised nationally and overseas.

Provision of Language, Literacy and Numeracy Support

Competency-Based Training at Kent Institute
Kent Institute delivers Vocational Education and Training (VET). Vocational education is post-secondary non-university education. Many universities are able to grant advanced standing for some Vocational Qualification (AQF).
All courses are delivered in the form of Competency-Based Training (CBT). This means that our training focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to operate effectively in the workplace.
Relevant competency standards outlined in the ANTA training packages are grouped into subjects which are delivered in the form of blocks, each of which takes four weeks to complete.
Failed Subjects
Satisfactory academic performance is a VISA condition. If your performance is not satisfactory, then you will be reported to the DIMIA. This can occur for instance, if you fail the same subject twice, or have a record of consistently failing subjects. You will not be allowed to repeat a subject more than once.
Extra Subjects
If you have completed more than the subjects required for an award you will have to pay the additional subjects before the award is issued. These additional subjects will be reflected on your Certificate of Attainment.
Timetable and Class Commitment
If you have a student Visa, it is a condition of this Visa that you attend the college for a minimum of 20 hours per week except during official college holidays. At Kent Institute you are required to attend 4 (four) hours per day.
In order to complete a subject you are required to attend 4 (four) hours per day or twenty (20) hours per week.
Training is delivered throughout a block by way of either:
· 2 hours lecture and 2 hours workshop or
· 3 hours lecture and 1 hour workshop
If you wish to complete more than one subject per module you must contact your Head of Studies. This is known as 'fast tracking'. 'Fast Tracking' may result in shortening your overall Course duration and DIMIA will be notified as this may impact on the length of your Student Visa.
It is compulsory for each student to complete all four hours every day and attendance is taken every hour.
Course Notes
Course notes for each subject have been developed to accompany the material delivered by your lecturer. Many course notes are accompanied by workshop exercises which you are required to complete during your allocated workshop session.
Assessment
All of the subjects that you will be studying in the Vocational College can be accessed using a number of different assessment strategies. These strategies cover a wide range of methods including:
Every subject will have at least two assessment tasks, usually one assignment/exam and tutorial exercises. The assignment/exam is a summative form of assessment and the assessment of individual competencies is addressed in the tutorial exercises. Your final result is based on the assignment mark and a demonstration of competency denoted by a 'C'.
If you do not complete the tutorial exercises you will be granted 'NYC' in that subject. Should you be deemed 'NYC' for any subject you have until the completion of your course to demonstrate competency in that subject.
Final results will be posted on the Student Information System, Intranet Website within two weeks of completion of module. Results will be expressed as a percentage known as the mark, while the competency determination will be expressed as a 'C' for Competency or 'NYC' for Not Yet Competent.
After this time, assignments may be collected from your teacher.
Appeals and Reassessment
Student assignments will be kept until the appeals and reassessment process is complete, i.e. one month after the completion of a block.
All students have the right to appeal if they believe they have been unfairly assessed. Appeals regarding assessments will only be considered within one month after the completion of a module.
Students are advised to make a copy of all assignments before submission.
Reassessment of Assignments
The appeal process is not a mechanism whereby permission will be granted for late submission of assignments or re-submission of assignments already completed. If the assignment mark is in question the student should consult with the lecturer first before seeking an independent assessment by the HOS.
